After returning to painting in recent years, Ms. Desai has embraced a more intuitive and organic approach to abstraction. Her work combines bold, high-contrast compositions with vibrant color inspired by Indian textiles and visual traditions. Through layering, scraping, and reworking the surface, she creates paintings that reveal traces of their own making, allowing history, accident, and intention to coexist. A lifelong passion for dancing has become central to her studio practice. The rhythm, balance, improvisation, and physical responsiveness required in dance directly inform her approach to paint. Sweeping gestures, shifts in tempo, and moments of pause echo the movements of the body in motion. Rather than illustrating dance, the paintings translate its energy and dynamism into visual form. By working between structure and spontaneity, control and release, she creates abstract paintings that are rooted in movement, color, and the physical experience of making. The Mayor’s Gallery is located on the 10th floor of Stamford’s Government Center. The City of Stamford which gives area artists an opportunity to exhibit their work in this space. There are six exhibitions annually featuring emerging and professional artists. Please contact curator Ellen Gordon at esgordon@optonline.net with questions or to purchase artwork. View the exhibit Tuesday thru Friday 1pm – 4pm. Photo ID required.
