Multiple Pets Rescued From Basement Fire: Stamford FD

Fire officials said thermal imaging cameras helped firefighters locate the animals.

STAMFORD, CT — Several pets were rescued from a basement fire at a multi-family home in Stamford on Thursday, according to fire officials. One cat later died, and a firefighter suffered minor injuries.

Firefighters were called to the home on Noble Street in the Waterside section of the city at 1:28 p.m. where they found heavy smoke coming from the basement.

"When firefighters entered the basement, they quickly encountered an unconscious dog; and from that point on – as they continued to advance the hose line into the house – they kept locating more and more animals," the SFD said in a news release.

Thermal imaging cameras, which are now carried by every Stamford firefighter, helped locate the animals in the house and expedited their rescue, the SFD added.

The SFD didn't specify how many animals were ultimately rescued from the house.

Firefighters and Stamford EMS personnel performed lifesaving measures on some of the animals, and they were all taken to Cornell University Veterinary Specialists in Stamford.

As of Thursday night, fire officials said all the pets were "doing well."

The Stamford Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
