Near & Far Aid awards grant to immigrant community center

$10,000 grant to help elevate community members out of poverty

Building One Community - The Center for Immigrant Opportunity, a community resource center for immigrants, has been awarded a $10,000 grant by the Near & Far Aid Association. The award enables Building One Community to maintain and enhance its core services that help Stamford-area immigrants gain job and language skills essential to their economic success, connect with resources that support their personal growth and prepare to contribute their talents to their new community.

“We feel strongly that Building One Community is providing a vital service that positively affects all those living in Fairfield County,” said Kim Meier, President of Near & Far Aid Association. “Their focus on education, employment and empowerment aligns with our commitment to provide pathways out of poverty. We are proud to work hand-in-hand with Building One Community using research-driven strategies to provide hope and lasting change for the immigrant population in our community.”

“This grant helps us continue and expand programs to best meet the diverse needs of our clients," said Building One Community Executive Director Catalina Horak. “We launched the Skills Development Program in 2015 with a Culinary Services track and then expanded in 2016 to our highly successful Home Health Aide track, which has attracted students originating from Latin America, Haiti, Morocco, and the Ukraine and Philippines. A track in Construction & Landscaping was added in 2017. Near & Far Aid continues to contribute to our existing core program, the development of additional skill tracks and ultimately the success of hundreds of working poor families who will be elevated out of poverty.”
