New Parking Garage Proposed Near Stamford Train Station

The garage proposal comes after The Stamford Transit-Oriented Development plan was discontinued.

STAMFORD, CT—The Stamford Transit-Oriented Development plan is now dead in the water.

The state and Stamford Manhattan Development Ventures discontinued talks after three years of negotiations after state officials concluded it wasn’t in the best interest of the state.

“I continue to believe that high-intensity Transit-Oriented Development is the right use of that property, and I commend DOT and SMDV for their unflagging effort to bring this agreement to conclusion,” said Office of Policy and Management Secretary Ben Barnes. “Unfortunately, the negotiations failed to yield an agreement that benefits the residents of our state to the greatest extent possible.

Instead the state Department of Transportation will design a new 1,000 space parking garage on South State Street. The garage should open in 2021 and will have walkways to connect to all train platforms. The cost to construction the new garage and demolish the old one will be about $53 million. The existing garage will remain open until the new garage is completed.
