STAMFORD, CT — A 37-year-old Stamford resident was charged and a couple of narcotics officers were injured following a drug arrest on the West Side of Stamford early Thursday evening, according to the Stamford Police Department.

Narcotics and Organized Crime officers conducted a multi-week investigation into Alfonso Lewis, nicknamed "Heat", after receiving intelligence about possible crack cocaine sales in Stamford, Capt. Richard Conklin of the SPD said.

A search warrant for Lewis' Myano Court apartment was obtained, as was an arrest warrant charging Lewis with the sale and possession of drugs.

Conklin noted that Lewis is "well-known" to the department, as he has a lengthy criminal record mostly involving drugs.

On Thursday around 4:15 p.m., officers were surveilling Lewis' apartment when he left in his Acura and went to nearby Spruce Street, Conklin said.

"Officers followed him to Spruce Street, where it looked like he had someone walking up to the car and he was going to make a drug deal," Conklin said. "That's a very strategic location because it's a one way street, very narrow, with cars parked on both sides."

Unmarked police cars boxed Lewis in from the front and back, and Lewis reversed his car and "accelerated rapidly" in an attempt to flee, Conklin noted, but he couldn't go anywhere.

"A couple of narcotics officers suffered minor injuries when he smashed his car into their car. They'll seek treatment and follow-up on those injuries," Conklin said.

Conklin said that Lewis rolled up his windows, locked the car, and started to eat the crack cocaine he was in possession of. Lewis was ordered out of the car, but he wouldn't respond, so officers smashed his window and pulled him out, Conklin said.

Lewis was arrested on the warrant, and officers went to search his apartment.

Officers found nine bags of crack cocaine, weighing approximately six grams, in the kitchen of the apartment, Conklin said, as well as electronic scales and packaging used to sell drugs.

Lewis' girlfriend and a small child were in the apartment at the time of the search; the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (CT DCF) was called and notified about child endangerment, Conklin said.

In addition to the arrest warrant charges, Conklin said Lewis was charged with:

Possession of narcotics; possession of narcotics with intent to sell; interfering with police; operating a drug factory; risk of injury to a minor; reckless driving; and operating a car without a license.

Lewis' original arrest warrant came with a $25,000 court-set bond. The additional charges carried an a $100,000 bond, Conklin said. Lewis was arraigned in court on Friday, and his bond was increased to $202,500.
