Plans to Redesign Stamford's Veterans Park To Be Unveiled

A public informational forum is scheduled for Tuesday.

The culmination of a year’s worth of work by the public and private stakeholders, including veterans groups, have worked together to envision and plan for a new design for Veterans Memorial Park.

According to Sandy Goldstein, president of the Downtown Special Services District, “We envision that the park’s new design will encompass many objectives.”

A public informational meeting will be held Tuesday, June 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ferguson Library Auditorium. The conceptual design plan will be presented by BETA Group, Inc.

Among the objectives of the proposal:

  • to celebrate and honor Veterans in a more comprehensive way;
  • to serve as a public meeting place;
  • to become an entryway to the mall and offices;
  • to become a venue for community-oriented events;
  • to be a primary link for east-west connection through the downtown;
  • to continue to serve as an integral hub for bus travel.

The goal of the redesigned park is to boost adjacent businesses, and provide a safe and clean open space that promotes healthy civic life.

“Currently the park is lacking connectivity and integration to adjacent uses, and this has a negative impact on the park’s vibrancy,” Goldstein said. “There is great potential for Veterans Memorial Park to be an active public meeting place that integrates seamlessly with its surroundings.
