As she was screaming, he allegedly squeezed her, causing the woman to lose consciousness.
He then taped her mouth shut and forced her into a chair.
At one point, the woman regained consciousness and pulled the tape off her mouth, at which time Patel covered her mouth with his hand.
The victim’s cell phone rang and Patel allowed her to answer it.
The woman was then able to distract Patel long enough to run to a neighbor’s apartment and call the police.
While the woman was calling the police, so was Patel, telling them what he had done.
Patel was arrested at the scene and taken to police headquarters.
Police said the suspect told them he had planned everything a week ago, wanting to talk to her about how she mistreated him and to teach her a lesson.
A roll of tape and the apartment keys were found in Patel’s gym bag.
Patel was charged with home invasion, second-degree burglary, first-degree unlawful restraint, third-degree assault and disorderly conduct.
His bond was set at $200,000.
