Stamford Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying the man they say was involved in the theft of an off-duty officer’s SUV and led police on a chase that ended when the SUV crashed into a parked car and the suspect ran off.

It all began about 8 a.m. Monday near the Ridgeway Shopping Center on Summer Street when police were alerted that an off-duty officer’s 2011 Chevrolet Traverse SUV was stolen. An officer spotted the vehicle in the 2900 block of Summer Street where two black females were seen exiting the vehicle. The officer attempted to pull over the driver and “it took off at a high rate of speed,” according to police.

The officer followed it onto Borglum Street where the vehicle was then involved in an accident with a parked vehicle and the male took off running, police said. The male ran through several back yards and made it onto Cold Spring Road where officers lost sight of him.

Stamford Police were still canvassing the neighborhood Monday afternoon.

Police said the vehicle was stolen out of Waterbury so they believe the suspects may have ties to the Waterbury and Stamford areas.

The suspect was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, jeans with dirt on right leg. He was carrying a sneaker and is barefoot on his left leg.

Anyone who sees the suspect should call 911 to relay his location to the Stamford Police.
