Recently Appointed Stamford Assistant Superintendent Named Greenwich Middle School Principal

The Greenwich appointment came one week after the Stamford appointment.

STAMFORD, CT — One week after the Stamford Board of Education voted to appoint Matthew Laskowski as assistant superintendent for secondary schools, Laskowski was named the new principal of Western Middle School in Greenwich.

Greenwich Public Schools announced the appointment of Laskowski, which is effective July 1, on Monday.

GPS Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones said Laskowski "has a history of impressive leadership, specifically at the middle school level, and has a strong reputation for being a collaborative and supportive leader who wants every student to be successful, and every staff member to be supported."

"He is a leader who is in the trenches with his staff, visiting classrooms on a daily basis, problem-solving directly with his staff, and communicating directly with families and students to make the school environment top notch," Jones added. "During the hiring process, all of his references talked about a work ethic which is off-the-charts and his ability to create a positive environment that brings the entire school community together as one cohesive team moving in the same direction."

Laskowski began his career as a physical education and health teacher at Rogers Park Middle School in Danbury before serving as dean of student support at Danbury High School.

He joined Stamford Public Schools in 2015 as an assistant principal at Stamford High School and was appointed principal of Rippowam Middle School in 2017.

He moved to the central office as executive director of access and opportunity in 2022, was named interim associate superintendent for middle schools in 2024 and was appointed to the position through the competitive hiring process for the 2025-26 school year.

"I believe leadership begins with being present, listening, and building meaningful relationships with students, staff, and families," Laskowski said in an announcement from GPS. "Western Middle School's commitment to collaboration, student growth, and continuous improvement made it the kind of school community I wanted to be part of. My goal is to build on Western's many strengths while ensuring every child is known, challenged, supported, and empowered to succeed."

As the assistant superintendent for secondary schools in Stamford, Laskowski would have supervised and evaluated principals, collaborated with the Teaching & Learning Department to implement best instructional practices, worked with the chief financial officer and the superintendent on budgeting and staffing, and monitored and supported efforts to achieve high academic standards for students.

"We would like to congratulate Matt on his appointment as the new principal at Western Middle School in Greenwich," Kathleen Steinberg, SPS spokesperson, told Patch in response to a request for commet.

"While we are sad to see Matt depart our district, we are grateful for his many years of service to Stamford’s students and families, and we wish him success and happiness in this new role"
