Retired Stamford Firefighter Dies At 91

Robert "Willy" Ernest Pilcher grew up in the Belltown area of Stamford and served the community as a firefighter for approximately 50 years.

STAMFORD, CT — The Stamford Fire Department announced this week that Robert "Willy" Ernest Pilcher, a retired Stamford firefighter, died on Aug. 8 at the age of 91. He leaves behind a legacy that includes approximately 50 years spent serving the department.

According to his obituary, Pilcher grew up in the Belltown area of Stamford and graduated from Stamford High School. Following his service in the U.S. Army, Pilcher joined the Stamford Fire Department, where he was known by his nickname "Willy."

In 1996, Pilcher received a commendation "in recognition of action above and beyond the call of duty," and was also recognized for his "long and unblemished" record. He served the community as a firefighter for approximately 50 years until his retirement.

A Darien resident, Pilcher treasured the camaraderie of his fellow firefighters and stayed in contact with them over the years by attending golf outings and the department's annual picnics. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, as well as several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service is scheduled to be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13, at Fairfield Memorial Park Cemetery in Stamford.
