STAMFORD, CT — Saks OFF 5th announced earlier this week that the Stamford Town Center location will close at the end of December.

Saks Fifth Avenue, an original tenant of the building in 1982, closed its doors in 2014. In 2015, Saks OFF 5th opened.

"After careful consideration, Saks OFF 5TH has decided to close its Stamford location. Through the regular course of business we continually evaluate store performance and other factors, and, from time to time, may determine it necessary to close a store. We expect this store to close to the public at the end of December. Customers can continue to shop with us at Saksoff5th.com and at our other locations," a spokesperson from Saks OFF 5th told Patch.

"We are committed to offering support and assistance to our team impacted by the closings. Eligible associates will receive appropriate employment separation packages and transfer opportunities will be explored where feasible," the spokesperson added.

The announcement comes on the heels of the Gap's exit from the Stamford Town Center. Gap was an original business at the mall, and closed in August.

Stamford Town Center General Manager Dan Stolzenbach said in an email to Patch in July that many businesses within the mall are reporting strong sales numbers, and he's looking forward to welcoming new businesses in the future.

"With each passing day, we are seeing more office workers, more new residents, and more of our best customers, many of whom we haven't seen since before the pandemic," Stolzenbach said at the time. "We're also hearing good news from our stores as many are reporting strong sales."

The Stamford Advocate reported that Michael Kors at the Stamford Town Center closed within the last week.

Stamford Mayor David Martin told Patch the latest announcement is disappointing.

"Although it is disappointing to see a popular retail store such as Saks OFF 5th leave the Stamford Town Center, it is my understanding that the strategy of their parent company, Hudson’s Bay Company, is to transition to an online sales model as the stores leases expire," Martin said.
