Stamford Board of Ed Candidates to Participate in Election Forum

The candidates forum is being sponsored by Stamford Peace, Beyond Limits and the Boys and Girls Club of Stamford.

Stamford Peace Basketball Club, Inc. (Stamford Peace) and its Beyond Limits Academic Program (Beyond Limits), together with the Boys & Girls Club of Stamford, will hold a non-partisan Board of Education Candidate Forum on Wednesday, Oct. 21.

All 13 registered candidates have confirmed their participation in the forum that is open to the public and will be held from 6:15 to 9:15 p.m. at the Yerwood Center, 90 Fairfield Ave.

Candidates will have an opportunity to make a brief opening statement, followed by a chance to answer questions posed to them first by a student panel and then questions collected from the audience. The forum will be moderated, with each candidate having equal time to respond to questions. An informal reception will follow.

“We’re delighted to be sponsoring this Board of Ed Forum to allow the general public to get to know the candidates,” said Andy Sklover, Co-Founder of Beyond Limits. “Our focus is on students, and the quality of the education they are receiving. We hope this forum stimulates more families to become involved in the political process, which can only enhance their comfort and ability to advocate for their children,” he said.

Established in 2008, Stamford Peace is a high-level basketball program serving approximately 1,000 boys and girls from first through twelfth grades throughout Fairfield County. In 2013, the Beyond Limits Academic Program was launched as a program of Stamford Peace, and provides highly subsidized one-on-one academic tutoring and informal mentoring to its student-athletes and Stamford Public Schools students.

“We’re excited to be collaborating with the Boys & Girls Club,” said Brian Kriftcher, Founder of Stamford Peace. “They share our strong commitment to our community’s young people, and hosting this Forum with them at the Yerwood Center hopefully reflects that,” he said.

Management of The Yerwood Center, a community center founded in 1943 by Dr. Joyce Yerwood, was taken over this past July by the Boys & Girls Club of Stamford. “We look forward to hosting the Candidate Forum at the new Yerwood Center,” said Mike Cotela, Executive Director of the Stamford Boys & Girls Club.
