Stamford Completes First Phase Of Dredging At Cove Island Park

STAMFORD, CT — The first phase of dredging at Cove Island Park marina was completed last week, according to an announcement from the city of Stamford.

Dredging involves the removal of sediments and debris from the bottom of bodies of water. It is often focused on maintaining or increasing the depth of navigation channels to ensure the safe passage of boats and ships. This project started on Nov. 29, 2022.

"Investing in our city’s parks, beaches and marinas is a priority for my administration, and we are pleased that this first phase of dredging has been completed," said Mayor Caroline Simmons in a news release. "I want to thank the city’s operations department for their coordination and continued work on this project, which will enhance the quality of life for residents who utilize our marinas."

In 2014, Stamford received funding through the Small Harbor Improvement Projects program (SHIPP) grant, which the city’s engineering bureau used to hire Coastline Consulting & Development LLC, to do the permitting, design and construction administration to dredge the Cove Island Park marina and channel.

This dredging was split into two projects, and the first dredge was composed of sand suitable for replenishing the park’s two beaches.

In September 2022, the Stamford received another SHIPP grant of use over $3 million, which will support the second phase of dredging, with an estimated completion of January 2024.
