The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, or IBDP, is a college-preparatory program offered at more than 3,500 schools in 155 countries. SHS is one of 11 high schools in Connecticut, public or private, to offer the program.
SHS was approved to offer the IBDP in May 2018, and its first class of 12 diploma candidates graduated in 2020. In 2022, the school was approved to offer the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, allowing students to participate in International Baccalaureate coursework throughout all four years of high school.
According to SPS, the IBDP curriculum is designed to develop critical thinking, research and writing skills intended to prepare students for college-level work.
More than 1,000 colleges and universities in the United States recognize the program and may offer college credit or advanced standing to students who complete it.
