Stamford Man Scammed Out of $400k, Arrests Made

The victim said he didn't trust banks and kept his fortune at home, police said.

STAMFORD, CT — An elderly Stamford man lost his $400,000 life savings after he fell victim to an elaborate "black money" scam, police said.

The man met three Liberian immigrants in July and they claimed to have millions of dollars in currency that was coated with a black coloring to make it appear worthless, according to the Stamford Advocate. They said the man could make millions if he gave them money to have the coating removed.

They claimed the U.S. coats aid money to make it appear worthless, according to police.
