2-Month-Old Baby's Death in Stamford Ruled a Homicide: UPDATE

The baby was brought from a daycare facility on the East Side of Stamford to Stamford Hospital on Tuesday.

Stamford police said late Wednesday that the death of Bella Redondo, a 2-month-old baby from New Canaan, has been ruled a homicide.

Police said in a statement that it was apparent when emergency response crews responded to the Little Bears Beginnings Daycare at 48 Wardwell Street on Tuesday afternoon that there was "some evidence of head trauma in addition to the breathing issue."

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner notified Stamford Police Detectives Wednesday afternoon that the death of Bella Redondo will be labeled a homicide and the cause of death is blunt force trauma to the head, police said.

"This is now being treated as a criminal investigation and we will be headed up by Chief States Attorney Richard Colangelo," police said in an evening news release.

This is the first homicide for Stamford in 2016.

"It is also a sad day for the family of Bella Redondo and the Stamford Police Department offers our condolences to Bella’s family. This is an ongoing investigation and we hope we could assist in bringing closure to the family," police said.

Facts of the Case

Police said on Tuesday they were alerted to the untimely death of a two month old female. At 3:12 p.m. Stamford EMS was dispatched to the daycare located on the East Side of Stamford.

EMS responded to a medical call in which a baby was having trouble breathing. EMS immediately transported the baby to Stamford HX where the baby stopped breathing and resuscitation efforts were put forth, police said.

At the HX doctors valiantly tried to save Bella but to no avail, police said. At 6:20 p.m. Tuesday Bella was pronounced deceased and the police were notified.

Stamford, CT — Police have identified the 2-month-old baby who was brought to Stamford Hospital dead as Bella Redondo.

"This is a sad day for the family of Bella Redondo, the Stamford Police Department offers our condolences to Bella’s family," said Lt. Diedrich Hohn, police spokesman. "This is an ongoing investigation and we hope we could assist in bringing closure to the family."

Bella is from New Canaan, Hohn told Patch.

Stamford EMS was dispatched to an East Side daycare around 3:12 p.m. Tuesday, Hohn said. Bella was transported to Stamford Hospital where she stopped breathing and resuscitation efforts were started.

She was pronounced dead at 6:20 p.m. and police were notified.

An autopsy is scheduled for today, and the State's Attorney's Office has been notified about the case, Hohn said.

"This is an active investigation, and more information will be forthcoming when it becomes available," Hohn said. "We will be able to comment more accurately when the autopsy and interviews are completed."
