Stamford Public Schools Considering New Cell Phone Policy

Stamford Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tamu Lucero recently released a draft for a potential new cell phone policy in the district.

STAMFORD, CT — The Stamford Public Schools District is considering the creation of a new cell phone policy that would be implemented districtwide.

In her recent weekly message, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tamu Lucero said that as a part of the recent Stamford Education Association (SEA) consultation meeting, she agreed to share a draft cell phone policy with PT Council, the superintendent and board of education student voice advisory and building leaders to get ideas and suggestions.

"Although all agree on the need to update our current outdated policy, the agreement on cell phone expectations remains a conundrum for many," Lucero said.

There is currently no blanket policy for the school district, since schools can set their own rules. In her draft policy, as a reference, Lucero outlined several policies that have been instituted in other districts. She then provided possible plans for a policy in Stamford.

"There is a growing body of evidence that suggests student access to cellular telephones and other electronic communication devices may be detrimental to student emotional wellbeing and academic growth. Therefore, the use of electronic communication devices and other such technology at school is considered a privilege not a right," a section of the draft policy said.

The draft policy outlines different versions that the school district could alter or adjust as needed.

Notably, for high school students, a section of the draft policy states that "cellular telephones or other wireless communication devices which have the capability to take photographs or videos shall not be used for such purposes while on school property or while a student is engaged in district-sponsored activities unless as expressly authorized in advance by the Principal or designee."

Lucero said in her message last week that the district will host a few listening sessions in the future to hear directly from families and staff.
