Students and parents engaged in a variety of different literacy activities including Storytelling by the “Campfire,” Silly Sentences, Fluency Flowers, Move to the Sound, Wheel of Fortune, and more. Each child received a book as well as "make and take activities" to bring home to encourage literacy activities that focus on the Big 5 components of reading. Thank you to the Stillmeadow staff members that volunteered their time at this wonderful evening event!

International Art Exchange at Rippowam
At Rippowam Middle School, Mrs. Arendt's 7th grade art class will be participating in the international art exchange - Artlink - through the non-profit Creative Connections. This year students will be partnered with a class in Sri Lanka.
The purpose of the art exchange is to give students an opportunity to share their culture and way of life through the creation and exchange of art work. These exchanges expand student’s awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the lives of peers living in another country. The exchange encompasses 21st century learning skills of communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.
Mrs. Arendt is deeply grateful to the Creative Connections team for their continued support (including grant funding), which affords our students the chance to participate in this worthwhile program.

WHS Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
On October 15, 2021, the WHS EL team and Mr. Ortiz Rivera celebrated the closure of Spanish Heritage Month with an activity for students where students explored the theme for this year’s 2021 Nationwide Spanish Heritage Month celebration in the United States "Esperanza, A celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope." WHS students presented and discussed inspirational quotes and statistics of Hispanics in the United States. WHS staff of Hispanic heritage presented their stories and experiences about how they arrived and became successful Hispanic individuals in the United States. Students also presented cultural information about their countries of origin. Some of our school guest speakers were Mrs. Maria Cisneros, Mr. Juan Pazmino, Mr. Ortiz Rivera, and Mr. Lucas Romero. The EL department teachers Ms. Bonnie Kelley-Young and Ms. Marcie Frishman further enriched the activities by presenting their experiences with family immigrants in the United States.
It’s Socktober At Westover Elementary
Shout out to Heather Stramandinoli from Westover Magnet Elementary School, for organizing and managing the “Socktober” fundraiser. This fundraiser is being held for the month of October. Heather and her 5th grade students and team are collecting new pairs of socks to donate to homeless shelters in our area. As of October 15, the Westover School community has donated 819 pairs of socks. Not only is this a worthy cause, but it is helping to build our school community, teach our students about giving to others and building teamwork. Thank you Heather for your hard work and dedication!
What is an SPS Shout Out?
An SPS Shout Out is a special recognition that acknowledges school communities, staff members or students who have inspired us with a unique project, an outstanding job or a special effort that had a positive impact on our students or community. Each week we will celebrate a few by sharing with all SPS staff and posting on the district website. Please share any or all of these with your friends and families.
SPS Administrators can submit Shout Outs for consideration through the form shared with them in the Administrators’ Weekly.
