Stamford Public Schools (SPS) announced that Toquam English Language Learner (ELL) Teacher Mary Enright has been selected for the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Short Term (Fulbright DAST) Program to Uzbekistan, a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Enright is one of 12 U.S. citizens who will travel to six countries around the world in 2021 on the Fulbright DAST Program. According to the organization, outstanding elementary, middle, and high school teachers and educators from the United States will share their educational expertise by serving in a consulting role at schools, nonprofit organizations, teacher-training institutions, and other educational organizations abroad. Recipients of Fulbright grants are selected based on academic and professional achievement, as well as record of service and demonstrated leadership potential. “It is truly such an honor to be selected. This is an incredible opportunity to share my expertise and to improve my own practice by exchanging ideas with other teachers and trainers in Uzbekistan,” said Enright. “I look forward to rich discussions on the art and science of teaching and learning a foreign language. After this especially difficult teaching year, I welcome this occasion for growth and renewal.” Each year, the Fulbright DAST program sends K–12 educators from the United States to participating countries to support projects in schools, teacher training colleges, government ministries, or educational nongovernmental organizations, as identified by U.S. Embassies and Fulbright Commissions. This summer, Enright will travel to a regional teacher-training center in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, to conduct English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Train the Trainer workshops with staff and provide in-service public-school English teachers with EFL professional development courses. For six weeks, she will lead seminars, workshops or other teacher professional development for educators; Advise Ministry of Education or other educational institutions on educational policies and projects, or participate in educational consultations; and present lectures or conference plenary presentations.
