New London's Kris Dunn showed why he may be the best player in the state.
The Providence-bound Dunn poured in 31 points Tuesday as the Whalers defeated 72-63 in the first game of the Northeast Christmas Classic at Webster Bank Arena.

Tuesday's contest was a matchup of defending state champions, New London in Class L and Trinity Catholic in Class M.
Trinity Catholic, ranked fourth in the state, dropped to 3-1 while New London, ranked sixth, improved to 4-1. St. Joseph defeated Archbishop Molloy 74-63 in Tuesday's second game.

Jason Boswell scored 22 points and Schadrac Casimir added 14 to lead Trinity Catholic.
New London took control in the first half, building a 37-28 lead at the intermission. Trinity Catholic got no closer than 42-38 midway through the third quarter.
The Crusaders will take on Molloy and legendary coach Jack Curran on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Bassick and Stamford advanced to the championship game of the Kuczo tournament with wins on Tuesday.
In the opener, Bassick routed Westhill 71-46 before Stamford pounded McMahon 69-49 in the nightcap to set up a rematch of last season's FCIAC championship game in Thursday's final.
Demetrius Thomas and Devin Coleman each scored 22 points for Bassick (4-0), which jumped out to a 34-25 halftime lead.
Sam Dorrisaint scored 15 points and Romario Narine added 10 for the Vikings (1-2), who are still playing with last year's leading scorer Chris Walters (knee injury).
Westhill will play McMahon in the consolation game on Thursday.

The Trinity Catholic girls basketball could not overcome the absence of i injured center Mackenzie Griffin and suffere a 67-33 loss to Pomperaug in the Plainville tournament.
Ali Palma scored 19 points for the Crusaders (3-3), who fell behind 34-16 at halftime.
