Mackenzie Griffin scored 17 points and Ali Palmer added 10 as the Trinity Catholic girls basketball team drubbed Bridgeport Central 71-21 Wednesday in the opener for both teams.
The Crusaders were never tested as they used a 29-0 run to build a 48-9 halftime lead and hold the Hiltoppers to under 20 percent shooting from the field.

Things figure to be different on Friday, however, when Trinity Catholic hosts defending FCIAC champion Trumbull, which opened with a 59-27 win over Fairfield Warde on Wednesday.

Kelsey Cognetta, who missed all of last season with an injury, scored all 14 of her points in the first half as the Stamford girls basketball team rolled to a season-opening 56-17 victory over Bassick.
Jasmine Barrett scored 12 points and Sam Krom added nine for the Black Knights in a game that never was close.
Stamford led 29-2 after the first quarter and 43-11 at the half. The Black Knights outscored Bassick 13-6 in a sloppy second as the Lions were held scoreless in the third quarter.

Megan D'Allesandro scored a game-high 32 points for Westhill, but it wasn't enough as the Vikings dropped a 59-49 decision at Wilton. Westhill was held under 20 points in the first half and trailed 29-17 at the intermission.

Hannah Jeffrey scored four goals and Ciel McDermid added three as the Greenwich girls hockey team opened its season with a 13-1 victory over the Stamford/Westhill Co-op team
Erin Ferguson, Meghan Spezzano, Skylar Jayes, Sara Schectman, Madeline Graves, Randi Schmaling each scored once for the Cardinals, who have every player back from last year's team that missed qualifying for the FCIAC playoffs for the first time since 2004.
Jess Blasznik scored the lone goal for Stamford-Westhill, which is in its first season competing on the varsity level.
Sara Ehrlich, who figures to be busy all season, made 37 saves for Stamford-Westhill.
