North Stamford almost pulled it off, but fell just short.

Despite beating East Haven 11-3 in the section one tournament Monday night in Orange, East Haven was the team that advanced to Wednesday's final against Fairfield American.

East Haven, Shelton National and North Stamford all finished at 2-2 behind 4-0 Fairfield American.

North Stamford needed a lot to have a chance to advance, and it got help early when Fairfield National defeated Shelton National, 12-2. North Stamford's victory over East Haven then created a three-way tie.

However, East Haven advanced based on a better runs allowed per inning differential -- 1.25 to 1.36.  

The Stamford senior American Legion team defeated zone four champion Greenwich 10-4 late Monday in the winner's bracket semifinals at Muzzy Field in Bristol. The contest was delayed two hours by rain and didn't end until midnight.

Stamford banged out 10 hits and took advantage of nine walks to stay unbeaten in the postseason. 

Dan White (three RBI) and Mike Summa (two RBI) each had two hits for Stamford, which scored four runs in the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie. 

Stamford will face Norwalk, a 5-2 winner of Trumbull, on Tuesday in the winner's bracket final at Muzzy Field at 6:30 p.m.

Stamford has won five straight postseason games, having won a pair of contests in the play-in round just to get into the main 16-team double elimination tournament.

The Stamford junior legion team routed Enfield 10-0 to advance to the eight-team main state tournament and will face an opponent to be determined on Wednesday.

Monday's game was stopped after five innings due to the mercy rule. Andrew Oakes allowed just two hits and struck out six over five innings to record the win.

Zone four teams continued their remarkable success in the postseason Monday as Ridgefield and Trumbull also advanced in the junior tournament.

Trumbull upset top-seed Niantic 4-2, and Ridgfield defeated Orange, 10-4.

Norwalk's game against at RCP was suspended in the fifth inning with Norwalk leading, 1-0. It will be resumed on Tuesday at Cromwell High School at 4 p.m.

Junior and senior teams from zone four are now at combined 15-0 in the postseason - 8-0 in the senior ranks and 7-0 in the junior ranks.

If Norwalk wins on Tuesday, half the field in the junior tournament will be comprised on zone four teams.

The 25th annual Sharkey Laureno Baseball Tournament begins Saturday at Cubeta Stadium and continues through Aug. 9. This year's tournament consists of two eight-team divisions, 15 and under and 14 and under. The tournament funds colleage scholarhips for graduates of Stamford's Junior Babe Ruth program.

The North American Hockey School Summer camps will take place Terry Conners Ice rink in Stamford during August. The Ryan Hull Goaltending Camp as well as Eric Lund's Elite Shooting/Scoring/Stick Handling Camp are set for Aug. 1-5: Goalies age 10 and under go from 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. while goalies age 11 and older are on from noon to 6 p.m. It's the same age and time brakedowns for the elite shooters.

The Glenn Anderson Stanley Cup Week is Aug 8-12, Age 10 and under from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and age 11 and older noon to 6 p.m. The All Phases Camp (power skating, shooting, defensemen) will Ryan Hughes and Lund is Aug 15-19 for ages eight through bantams and midgets. Aug 22-26 features power skating, shooting, defense and goalie camps.
