The Stamford senior American Legion team was eliminated from the state tournament following a 9-1 setback to Middletown on Wednesday at Muzzy Field in Bristol.

It was the second straight defeat for Stamford, which had won five straight games to reach the winner's bracket semifinals. But Stamford fell into the loser's bracket with a 10-8 loss to Norwalk on Tuesday.

Middletown will face Branford on Thursday for the right to take on Norwalk in Friday's final in Bristol. Branford, the top seed and defending Legion state champion, ousted Greenwich earlier Wednesday, 4-1.

West Hartford finished off a 6-1 win over East Hartford on Wednesday, determining the final matchups in the quarterfinals of the junior American Legion state tournament that begins on Thursday.

No. 7 seed Trumbull battles No. 2 Southington in the second game of a doubleheader at Veterans Field in Windsor Locks at 6:30 p.m. No. 3 Stamford clashes with No. 6 West Hartford in the opener at at 3:30 p.m.

In the other quarterfinal doubleheader, which will be played at Rogers Park in Danbury, No. 5 seed Ridgefield takes on No. 4 Bristol at 3:30 and No. 8 Norwalk faces No. 1 Bethel at 6:30 p.m.

Half of the final field of eight is comprised of teams from zone four.

The semifinals take place on Friday at 6 p.m. in Windsor Locks and Danbury with the championship game set for Saturday at 1 p.m. at Muzzy Field in Bristol.

It was a difficult defeat for Stamford, which led 7-0 early in the game. It now drops into the loser's bracket and will play Middletown on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Muzzy Field in an elimination.

 

 

The 25th annual Sharkey Laureno Baseball Tournament begins Saturday at Cubeta Stadium and continues through Aug. 9. This year's tournament consists of two eight-team divisions, 15 and under and 14 and under. The tournament funds colleage scholarhips for graduates of Stamford's Junior Babe Ruth program.

The North American Hockey School Summer camps will take place at Terry Conners Ice rink in Stamford during August. The Ryan Hull Goaltending Camp as well as Eric Lund's Elite Shooting/Scoring/Stick Handling Camp are set for Aug. 1-5: Goalies age 10 and under go from 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. while goalies age 11 and older are on from noon to 6 p.m. It's the same age and time brakedowns for the elite shooters.

The Glenn Anderson Stanley Cup Week is Aug 8-12, Age 10 and under from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and age 11 and older noon to 6 p.m. The All Phases Camp (power skating, shooting, defensemen) will Ryan Hughes and Lund is Aug 15-19 for ages eight through bantams and midgets. Aug 22-26 features power skating, shooting, defense and goalie camps.
