Westhill's John Petrini and Brandon Pomerance defeated Fairfield Ludlowe's Daniel Adajian and Reid Andren 6-3, 6-3 in the finals of the state Open doubles championship Wednesday at the Yale Courts.

Westhill (23-2), which lost to the Conard in the Class LL state championship game, dopped one spot and finished third in the final New Haven Register top 10 state media softball poll.

 The Vikings, who received one first-place vote in the final poll, were denied their second consecutive state title.

Westhill ended the regular season at No. 1, but dropped to a tie for second after getting upset by Fairfield Ludlowe in the FCIAC playoffs.  

Foran (22-4), which was unranked at the start of the state tournament, climbed to No. 1 after winning the Class L title. Conard (20-3), also previously unranked,  jumped to No. 2.

Seymour (25-2)  was fourth, followed by  Sacred Heart Academy (16-10) ,  Bacon Academy (22-4),  Hale-Ray (24-3), Waterford (22-2), Darien (22-4)  and Southington (17-3).

Darien, which won the FCIAC title, entered the state tournament ranked sixth. The Blue Wave lost to Foran in the Class L semifinals.
