 Tuesday marked the opening ceremonies for the District One Little League tournament, which got under way with defending champion North Stamford defeating Springdale, 5-2 in the first game.

During the opening ceremonies, which included the parade of the 14 teams competing, the 1951 Stamford American Little League World Series champions were honored on the 60th anniversary of their victory.

Pool play continues in the District One tournament through July 10 at various sites in the region.

Group A includes National Lione (Stamford), North Stamford, Northrop (Stamford) , Redding, Ridgefield American, Springdale (Stamford) and Stamford American. Group B includes Darien American and National, Fedederal (Stamford), Norwalk, Ridgefield National, Weston and Wilton.

After round robin play within in each group, the two top finishers in each poll advance toa  playoff tournament.

The eventual winner qualifies for the section one tournament, to be hosted by Orange of District Four, July 20-27. The two sectional winners clash in a best-of-three series to determine the state champion.

The Connecticut state winner advances to the New England Regionals in Bristol from Aug. 4-14.  The eight regional winners from around the country qualify for the Little World Series, to be played from Aug. 18-28 in Williamsport.

-- Westhill softball player Erin Downey was one of 22 student-athletes from Connecticut to earn All-State academic honors but the only one from Fairfield County.

Downey, who ranked in the top one percent of more than 500 students in her class at Westhill, received an academic scholarship to attend Boston College in the fall.

She also was selected as Scholar Athlete of the Year at Westhill and is a member of the National Honor Society and the French Honor Society.
