By the time the Westhill softball team begins play in the CIAC Class LL state tournament, it will have had more than a week off.
The defending state champions, who were stunned by Fairfield Ludlowe 1-0 in the FCIAC quarterfinals last Tuesday after an undefeated regular season, earned the top seed and a bye in the first round.

Westhill (20-1) begins its quest for another state title on Wednesday, when it faces the winner of first-round contest between No. 16 Norwich Free Academy (12-8) and No. 17 Pomperaug (12-8).
Westhill could see an FCIAC opponent in the quarterfinals as there are three other league teams in the Vikings' part of the bracket.

In other first-round games, Danbury hosts Greenwich and Ridgefield plays at Amity. The winner of those two games square off in the second round with the winner of that game possibly facing Westhill in the round of eight.
Last season, Westhill won the school's second softball state title with a 4-2 victory over Newtown in the finals.
No. 1 last weekend, Westhill has dropped into a tie for second with Seymour (22-1) in the latest New Haven Register top 10 state poll.
Waterford (22-1) took over the top spot, collecting 11 of 13 first-place votes with Westhill garnering the other two top votes.
Southington (17-2) is fourth, followed by Lauralton Hall (17-2), FCIAC champion Darien (20-3), Holy Cross (20-3), Brookfield (18-5), Griswold (19-3) and Bacon Academy (19-3).
