Freshman Jess Laszlo continued her spectacular season Thursday, scoring both goals to lead the Westhill girls soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Danbury in the first round of the CIAC Class LL state tournament.
Laszlo had a goal in each half, giving her 23 for the season. Her second of the afternoon came with 18 minutes remaining, giving the Vikings (11-2-4) some insurance.
Westhill, the fifth seed which has reached the Class LL state finals in each of the last two seasons, will host No. 12 Masuk in the second round on Saturday. The Panthers advanced with a 2-1 win over Southington.

The Westhill boys (9-6-2) also are looking to make some noise in the state tournament after a remarkable run to the FCIAC playoffs. They are seeded 19th and play at No. 14 Bristol Central in the first round of the Class LL tourney on Friday (2 p.m.).
If Westhill advances, it is guaranteed to face an FCIAC opponent in the second round on Monday as it would take on the winner of the contest between No. 3 Norwalk and No. 30 Stamford (6-9-1), the last team into the tournament.

The Vikings dug themselves an early 0-5 hole, which included forfeiting three games for using an illegal player, but they made a dramatic 9-0-2 charge to qualify for the FCIAC playoffs as the No. 6 seed (losing in the quarterfinals to No. 3 seed Darien).
Still basking in the glow of last week's 36-29 upset of New Canaan, the Stamford football team hosts McMahon on Saturday (6:30 p.m.)
Bryan Boderick accounted for five touchdowns last week -three through the air and two on the ground - as the Black Knights defeated the Rams for the first time since 1977 to improve to 5-2.
McMahon enters Saturday's contest at 3-5 after last week's 35-14 loss to Greenwich, which clinched a berth in the FCIAC championship game Thursday with a 17=7 win at Danbury.
Also on Saturday, winless Westhill hosts undefeated Staples (1:30 p.m.), which can book its ticket to the FCIAC championship game with a win, and Trinity Catholic (3-5) hosts St. Joseph on Saturday at 1 p.m.
