Valentine, 61, who guided the Mets to the 2000 World Series against the Yankees in the last "Subway Series", has a career record of 1,117-1,072. He spent seven-plus seasons as the Texas Rangers' manager before skippering the Mets for six campaigns.
Recently, Valentine has turned down a number of jobs, but he did not hide the fact he would like to pursue the Red Sox's position.

"I'd be honored to have the interview process continue," Valentine told the Post. "I'd be excited to have it continue."
ESPN.com reported Sunday that Valentine will meet with the Red Sox on Monday.
The Red Sox are looking for a manager after Terry Francona was not retained following the biggest September collapse in Major League Baseball history.
The Miami Marlins, Chicago White Sox, Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals all have made managerial hires since the end of the season. The Red Sox's position remains the only one unfilled.
Stamford's Andrew Erskine, a junior at Amherst College and graduate of Westhill, participated in the NCAA Division III cross country championships on Sunday.
The lone male representative from Amherst, he clocked in with a time of 25:49.76 to finish 183rd out of the championship field’s 279 runners at the University of Wisconsin-Oskosh.
Erskine qualified for the national championship by finishing sixth in the New England Championships with a time of 25:01.3 in the six-kilometer race at Bowdoin College.
Erskine placed 66th at last year’s NCAA Regional Championship with a time of 27:13.1, but shaved more than two minutes off that mark to qualify this year.
