The boys basketball team made sure it didn't have to worry about tiebreakers.

Bryan Boderick and Shawn Padilla each scored 12 points Wednesday as the Black Knights clinched the No. 6 seed in the FCIAC playoffs with a 57-42 victory over Harding.

The Black Knights, who finished the regular season 12-8 overall and 11-7 in the FCIAC, took a huge step toward the playoffs with a 77-72 win over Bassick on Monday.

Continuing the monmentum from that triumph, Stamford jumped out to a 21-9 lead after the first quarter Wednesday. The Black  Knights never led Harding get the deficit into single digits, building their advantage to 37-20 early in the third period.

Barry Boderick added 11 points for Stamford, which will take on No. 3 seed Ridgefield (15-5, 13-5) in the FCIAC  quarterfinals on Saturday at noon at Fairfield Ludlowe.

Jamar Gaynor, Steven Walker and Tyshaun Mullings each scored eight points for Harding (4-16, 3-15), which completed one of the worst seasons in the program's storied history.

The Trinity Catholic boys basketball team earned the No. 2 seed for the FCIAC playoffs in dramatic fashion.

Paschal Chukwu followed in an offensive rebound at the buzzer Wednesday as the Crusaders posted a 61-59 victory over Trumbull,  whose FCIAC playoff hopes ended in heartbreaking fashion. Those were Chukwu's only two points of the game.

Jason Boswell scored 16 points for Trinity Catholic (15-5, 14-4), which will face No. 7 Danbury in the FCIAC quarterfinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Fairfield Ludlowe.

Casimir Schodrac scored 14 points and Tremain Fraiser added 12 for the Crusaders, who led 36-31 at halftime.

Two free throws by Trumbull's Jason Lima tied the game at 59-59 with eight seconds remaining.

Sam Turner scored 20 pointsa and Travis Fonseca added 11 for the Eagles, who finished 10-10 and 9-9. They would have snagged a playoff spot if they could have pulled off the upset.

Trumbull, which made nine 3-pointers, outscored Trinity Catholic 18-10 in the third quarter to take a 44-41 lead into the final period.

The Ridgefield High boys basketball team showed that it might still be a force in the FCIAC playoffs.

Kurt Steidl scored 21 points and Jeff Racy added 16 Wednesday as the Tigers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 54-46 victory over Westhill in Stamford.

Other than St. Joseph, Westhill had been the hottest team in the FCIAC, winning 10 of its previous 11 games.

Ridgefield, which opened a 27-19 lead at the half, finished the regular season at 15-5 and 13-5. The Tigers grabbed the No. 3 seed for the FCIAC playoffs and will face Stamford in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

The Black Knights clinched a playoff spot Wednesday with a 57-42 win over Harding.

Chris Walters had 27 points for Westhill, exactly half of the Vikings' total.

The Vikings closed the regular season at 14-6 and 13-5. Westhill from the No. 2 seed to fourth and will face defending FCIAC champion Bassick on Saturday.

Tony Dobbinson was Westhill's next leading scorer with just six points.

John Shanahan scored three goals Wednesday as the Trinity Catholic boys hockey team defeated Westhill 5-2 at the Terry Conners Rink.

Justin Brown and Jeff Cortese added one goal apiece for the Crusaders, who conclude the regular season at 9-11 and 8-4.

Earlier in the day, Trinity Catholic clinched a berth in the FCIAC's tier one playoffs when Fairfield lost to Darien, 5-2. The Crusaders finished in a three-way tie for fourth with New Canaan and Wilton and grabbed one of the six playoff berths.

Lukas Znosko and Evan Shaulson scored for Westhill, which dropped to 5-12-2 and 5-7.

Adam Goldstone (10) Tyler Phillipson (17) combined to make 27 saves for Westhill while Brian Romano stopped 33 shots for Trinity Catholic.

The Crusaders, who were 2-10 at one point, will take on St. Joseph in the first round of the tier one playoffs on  Saturday. Westhill will compete in the tier two playoffs for the seventh- through 10th-place teams.

The 14th-seeded Trinity Catholic girls basketball team has earned a home game in the first round of the Class M state tournament while Stamford and Westhill will open on the road in the Class M tournament.

Trinity Catholic (13-7)  hosts No. 19 Kolbe Cathedral (12-8) on Monday and would play either No. 3 Ellington (18-2) or No. 30 Weston (12-8) in the second round on Wednesday if it advances.

In Class LL, also on Monday, No. 23 Stamford (11-9) visits No. 10 Mercy of Middletown (16-4) and No. 26 Westhill (10-10) plays at No. 7 St. Joseph (17-3) in an all-FCIAC battle.

St. Joseph will be without leading scorer Nancy Stablein, who suffered a torn ACL in the Cadets' loss to Stamford in the FCIAC quarterfinals on Wednesday and is lost for the season.

The Stamford-Mercy winner will take on the St. Joseph-Westhill winner in the second round on Wednesday. If Stamford pulls the upset, it could get a rematch with the Cadets.
