Stamford Young Artists Philharmonic (SYAP), the regional youth symphony orchestra organization, continues its 53nd Concert Season with a performance on Sunday, May 19, 4pm at the Palace Theatre, 61 Atlantic Street, Stamford, CT. SYAP encompasses seven performing ensembles and is comprised of nearly 200 dedicated student musicians who are selected by audition and hail from a dozen towns in Fairfield and Westchester Counties.
In this 2012-2013 concert season, SYAP welcomed new Music Director and Principal Conductor Christian Capocaccia, who succeeds founder Salvatore Princiotti. Under the baton of Maestro Capocaccia, SYAP’s flagship orchestra Young Artists Philharmonic will present Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture Op. 62, West Side Story, by Leonard Bernstein, and violin soloist Anna Leunis performing the Sibelius Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47.
Anna Leunis, 16, began playing the violin at the age of four and is now a junior at Darien High School. Anna has been studying with Asya Meshberg for five years and has learned and performed complete concertos by De Beriot, Mozart, Viotti, Vieuxtemps, Mendelssohn, and Sibelius. Anna also has been studying quartets with Asya Meshberg and is the leader of the Orpheus String Quartet. She has performed complete quartets by Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Dvorák, Piazzolla, Beethoven and Shostakovich at the Chamber Music Institute for Young Musicians. This year she is the concertmistress in the Norwalk Youth Symphony. In 2008 Anna won the audition to receive a master class with Midori at the Luzerne Music Center. She also was awarded the very first Emerging Young Artist Scholarship by the Stamford Center for the Arts in 2010.
Also performing in the concert will be Young People’s Symphony, the organization’s upper-intermediate full orchestra under the direction of Gloria Sinaguglia, and Young String Ensemble, SYAP’s string orchestra for intermediate level players led by Barbara DiFranco.
Tickets: Admission is $25 for adults and $20 for seniors (ticket price includes SCA Facility Fees). All students and music teachers are admitted free, but must visit the Palace Theatre Box Office for a ticket.
