Broadman enlisted as a private first-class in the U.S. Army in 1943 when he was only 22 years old. Towards the end of his five years in the U.S. Army, he went to medical school, becoming one of the youngest doctors to graduate with an MD at the time.

Following graduation, he worked as a commissioned officer for Veterans Affairs and published two scientific papers on Alzheimer’s disease and heart surgery, which led to his six-year tenure as governor of the American College of Surgeons. He then went on to join his wife, also a doctor, traveling the world to provide medical missionary work intermittently for 72 years.

Other veterans at the community include Jim Duffy, who was drafted into the Army in 1953 during the Korean War. As a private first-class, Duffy was assigned to engineering development in Washington D.C., where he used electronics for data processing.

Following his end of active service in the Army in 1955, he continued using the skills he learned during his military career at the American Machine and Foundry, America’s largest recreational equipment company, which created a wide range of products, including atomic reactors, garden equipment, and yachts.

Duffy recalls his time in the army fondly. Duffy is proud to call Edgehill home, where he has formed deep bonds with other resident veterans over their shared experiences in the U.S. Armed Forces.

On Veterans Day, and every day, Edgehill is proud to recognize the many veterans who call Edgehill home. Located in Stamford, Edgehill is a CCRC offering an exceptional, maintenance-free senior living lifestyle, a wide variety of premium services and amenities and a full continuum of on-site health care.
