Stamford's So Fresh Doughnut Co. Offers A Delicious, Unique Experience

The shop opened up in Stamford on Sept. 29. The shop is closed on Wednesdays, but open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. the rest of the week.

STAMFORD, CT — Doughnut lovers now have a new option in Stamford to grab a tasty treat with the addition of So Fresh Doughnut Co., at 990 Hope St.

But unlike regular doughnuts you can find at your favorite coffee shop or bakery, the doughnuts, and the experience, is unique at So Fresh. Each doughnut is made fresh on the spot, and they're miniature so you don't have to share with anyone else.

Stamford residents Stanley Wadolowski and his girlfriend Lori Abad officially opened the shop on Sept. 29. The shop is closed on Wednesdays, but open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Tuesday.

The menu features 14 different doughnuts, which are about 1.5 inches in size, and range from a simple old fashioned with powdered sugar, to the Trixie, which has chocolate icing, caramel icing and Lorna Doone shortbread crumble.

There is also an Oreo Crush doughnut that has oreos and vanilla icing, and the Suga Boom, which has powdered sugar and a raspberry drizzle, among many others.

The doughnuts are classified as vanilla cake, although the shop will offer blueberry, chocolate, and apple cider creations on occasion. Seasonal offerings will also rotate. All the ingredients are Kosher.

Coffee, which is roasted locally in Norwalk, is also available.

When a customer walks in and orders, the doughnuts are made right in front of the counter. The doughnuts are then placed on a table where the customer can see them decorated, and then they're handed over freshly made.

"We don't even have shelves on the walls or doughnuts in pans or cases," Wadolowski said. "We just try to truly provide a unique gourmet experience from start to finish."

Wadolowski has a experience in the hedge fund field, and Abad comes from a medical background. The couple had the idea for their own doughnut shop after they witnessed so many half-eaten doughnut in work meetings.

"A lot of times we see reps. or sales people bring in doughnuts, and they take a small piece or cut it in half and no one ever touches the other half because they don't know who else has touched it," Wadolowski explained. "We wanted to create something that's top-notch and has very little compromise and high standards. We just want to guarantee the best product for people. We didn't find anyone else that has that same idea."

The doughnuts were sold at Total Mortgage Arena in Bridgeport, home of the New York Islanders' farm team, as a proof-of-concept trial run. There are also other events held at the arena throughout the year.

Wadolowski said the reaction was overwhelming, and that people were coming to the arena just for the doughnuts.

"We decided to take the next step in December 2019 and signed a lease here in Stamford," Wadolowski added, noting that the COVID-19 pandemic delayed their opening.

But now that the shop is officially up and running, Wadolowski said there are plans to franchise the business in the future. He hopes to add ice cream to the menu, too.

The reaction to the storefront has been equally positive. There are regular customers already, and some people are even coming in multiple times a day, Wadolowski said, adding that the shop has already taken orders for weddings and other large events.

"When you come to our store, you'll see that this is a labor intensive process. We are making doughnuts, we're decorating them on the spot, and people really appreciate it when you give them a fresh product," Wadolowski said.

Customers can order doughnuts online for delivery or pickup. For more information, go to the So Fresh Doughnut Co. website, or follow them on Instagram.
