Students At Stamford's JCC Nursery School Donate To Charity
The donations will help economically disadvantaged children in Stamford get new clothing and school supplies.

STAMFORD, CT - From the JCC Sara Walker Nursery School: The children of the JCC Sara Walker Nursery School in Stamford, ranging in age from two to four years old, have chosen to donate the money they collected throughout the school year to help economically disadvantaged children in Stamford get new clothing and school supplies. Each week the nursery program children bring a donation (“tzedakah”) to school and 3 times a year, together with their teachers, decide where the donation should go. Back to School Shop, Inc. was the recipient of this generosity as it has been several times in the past, receiving well over $1000. “We always try to present these young children with options that they can really understand, “ says Anne Liss Johnson, the Managing Director of the Nursery School. “We explained to them that not every family is able to buy new clothes, shoes, coats and backpacks, and that through their donations they are helping other children in our community go back to school shopping like they do.”
Back to School Shop, Inc. is a local non-profit organization that creates a one day pop-up store before the start of each school year where economically disadvantaged elementary school students in Stamford can “shop” for clothes and school supplies at no cost. Back to School Shop founders and Stamford residents, Meryl Japha and Jane Levene, were on hand to accept the children’s donations at the school’s final Shabbat service at Temple Sinai.
“Watching those young children reverently bring up their classes’ buckets of change and dollar bills to add to the collection was really inspiring” remarked Levene . It’s wonderful that they are learning so young how good it feels to help their neighbors.” Japha explained to the children how the money raised would help Back to School Shop purchase brand new clothing, school supplies and books for 275 elementary school students in Stamford, who will have a chance to choose their own new items on July 29 that Back to School Shop’s fourth annual event. “We are so grateful for the support of the wonderful children, teachers and administrators of the Sara Walker Nursery School!” expressed Japha. “It will make a big difference for some very deserving children.”
