STAMFORD, CT — Ashley Florian, 18, of Stamford, remains in critical condition at Stamford Hospital after police said she was hit by a car on Thursday night.

The driver, identified as 35-year-old Paul Leuthoid, also of Stamford, was arrested and charged with operating under the influence, according to an update from the Stamford Police Department early Friday evening.

Police said around 10:10 p.m. on Thursday, Leuthoid was driving a 2020 Subaru sedan northbound on Cold Spring Road approaching the area of Travis Avenue when Florian attempted to cross the street and entered into the path of the car.

Police said Leuthoid remained at the scene, called 911, and cooperated with the investigation. Florian was taken to Stamford Hospital with life threatening injuries.

During the on-scene investigation, Leuthoid was showing signs of intoxication, said Sgt. Jeffrey Booth, supervisor of the department's Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad (CARS).

Leuthoid was "unable to perform field sobriety tests up to standard," according to Booth, and he was arrested and charged with operating under the influence. Booth noted that Leuthoid would not submit to chemical testing; he was later released after posting a $5,000 bond.

Police are asking people who may have witnessed the crash or have more information to call the department's Collison Analysis and Reconstruction Unit at 203-977-4712. The incident is being investigated by Sgt. Ryan P. McAllister and Officer Jillian Moller.
