With Memorial Day Weekend almost here, police used the discovery to educate residents on the proper handling of American flags.

STAMFORD, CT — According to the Stamford Police Department, a trash bag full of American flags was discovered near a construction site in Stamford on Thursday.

Police did not specify where exactly the discovery was made, or where the bag might've come from. Photos posted by police on Facebook were taken at the corner of Warren Street and Myrtle Avenue.

"Today while working a construction job, an officer along with their Grasso crew located a trash bag full of American flags," police posted on Facebook. "The Stamford Police Department would like to take this moment to educate everyone on the proper disposal of American flags."

Police cited the U.S. flag code, which says that when a flag is in such a condition or tattered that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

"This can be done by folding the flag into the ceremonial triangle, placed in a box, burned and then buried," police said.

Residents can also dispose of tattered American flags by dropping them off in a flag disposal box, or by donating them to organizations like police departments or the American Legion. Girl and Boy Scouts also collect disposed flags and hold ceremonies to retire them, police explained.

"These flags found today were taken by the police department and will be given the proper dignified ceremony," police added.
