Update Issued On Stamford Public Schools Superintendent Search
Board of Education President Andy George provided an update this week on the school district's superintendent search.
STAMFORD, CT — The Stamford Board of Education has advanced its search for a new superintendent following weeks of community input and the launch of a formal recruitment process.
Board President Andy George said in an update this week consulting firm Zeal Education Group conducted 74 meetings between Jan. 5 and Jan. 22 with teachers, staff, parents, students, city officials and residents to gather feedback on the qualities stakeholders want in the district’s next leader. That input was used to create a leadership profile to guide candidate screening.
Zeal noted in a letter to the SPS community that the collective feedback established several themes that will guide the school board as it evaluates candidates:

- Student and Teacher Support: There is a strong desire to prioritize student success and create a supportive environment for both students and teachers. Ensuring that our educators feel valued and have the necessary resources and training is crucial for fostering academic and emotional growth.
- Transparency and Communication: Many participants emphasized the need for improved transparency in decision-making and clearer communication between the administration, staff, and the community. Building trust through open and honest dialogue is a priority for all involved.
- Equity and Inclusion: Ensuring that all students, regardless of their background, have access to high quality education and opportunities was a recurring theme. There is a call for more inclusive practices and policies that address disparities in educational opportunities.
- Curriculum and Academic Standards: Maintaining high academic standards and ensuring consistency in curriculum across schools are seen as vital to preparing students for future success. A focus on core academic subjects is essential to enhance student preparedness and achievement.
- Budget and Resource Allocation: Participants expressed concerns about resource allocation and the need for effective budget management. Prioritizing spending that directly impacts student learning and reducing administrative costs were highlighted as important areas for consideration.
The superintendent job posting for SPS is now live and will remain open through March 8, according to George. Zeal will recruit and vet applicants and present about eight to 10 candidates to the board, with five to seven semi-finalists interviewed in late March.
Two to three finalists are expected to participate in in-person interviews in mid-April, with the board aiming to appoint a new superintendent at its April 28 meeting.

The new superintendent would then begin his or her role on July 1.
