Professional Wrestling Legend Dies at 69

Known as 'The American Dream,' Dusty Rhodes liked to sport polka dot tights in the ring.

WWE has confirmed that superstar Dusty Rhodes who was known as “The American Dream,” died at the age of 69 on Thursday morning.

Rhodes, whose real name was Virgil Runnels, was known for his polka dot tights, according to TMZ Sports. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007. The six-foot-two Rhodes tipped the scales at 275 pounds and was known for his signature move dubbed ‘The Bionic Elbow,’ according to his WWE profile.

The Stamford-based WWE that was founded by Greenwich residents Linda and Vince McMahon, issued this statement, “WWE extends its sincerest condolences to Runnels’ family, friends and colleagues.”

Among the titles Rhodes won were NWA World Champion; NWA World Tag Team Champion; United States Champion and NWA Television Champion.

The wrestling community expressed their grief over the passing of the WWE legend on Twitter.
