STONINGTON, CT — Three recent Stonington High School graduates received scholarships from the Stonington Garden Club for their interest and work in environmental sciences, according to a statement.
Sophie Hryn, Finn Meadows and Camryn Williamson received the awards during the high school's Senior Awards Night in June.
The club traditionally awards two $1,000 scholarships each year. This year, it added the $2,000 Candy Sanford Memorial Scholarship, established by Tom Sanford and his family in memory of his wife, a longtime garden club member and past president.
The new scholarship supports a graduating Stonington High School senior planning to study landscape design, horticulture, agricultural sciences or marine biology.
Hryn received the Environmental Studies Award. She co-founded the high school's Environmental Club and helped establish a school recycling program and pollinator pathway garden. She also volunteered with Clean Sound and Harbors, monitoring water health in the Mystic River and Long Island Sound.
Hryn is attending Northeastern University to study biochemistry and environmental science.
Meadows received the Environmental Awareness Award. He served as vice president of the Environmental Club and helped organize the 2026 Groton Public Library Earth Day Expo. He is attending Connecticut College and plans to pursue law school.
Williamson received the inaugural Candy Sanford Memorial Scholarship. She interned with Sea Grant at UConn Avery Point, where she studied the impact of oyster aquaculture on the local community. She also participated in the Youth Climate Summit and worked with the Alliance for the Mystic Watershed.
Williamson is attending San Diego State University to study environmental engineering.
The garden club began its scholarship program for graduating Stonington High School students in 2017.
