Broadening uses allowed in M1 Zone

Special Public Meeting on Thursday September 27th hosted by Stonington's Economic Development Commission at the Stonington Police Station Meeting Room

Special Public Meeting on Thursday September 27th hosted by Stonington's Economic Development Commission at the Stonington Police Station Meeting Room to discuss broadening uses allowed in Stonington's manufacturing zones (M1 zoning districts).  The departure of Yardney will result in 260,000 sq. ft. of additional vacancy on Mechanic Street in Pawcatuck (an M1 zone).  EDC believes that broadening uses allowed in M1 zones on Mechanic Street and elsewhere in Stonington will benefit the community.

Currently a start-up company (Mystic Spine and Sport) has an application pending before the Planning and Zoning Commission to open an indoor gym and health club on Mechanic Street, however it can't open without a change in zoning regulations because health clubs are not allowed in M1 zones.   EDC's Special Meeting will provide the opportunity for property owners and the community to make recommendations to EDC regarding additional new uses for all of Stonington's M1 zones.   Manufacturing and office use, plus new service and retail uses requiring floor space and low parking needs should be considered for M1 zones.    The current uses allowed by zoning for M1 no longer reflects what is needed for mill re-use and higher levels of occupancy.

EDC has hired Planimetrics (a consultant) to assist with this initiative and they will be moderating the Special Meeting on September 27 (Thursday) at 7:00PM at the Stonington Police Station Meeting Room.     Comments from the meeting will be used to prepare recommendations for consideration by Stonington's Planning and Zoning Commission which governs M1 use regulations .   Please review the attached invitation and info package.
