EASTER SUNDAY
When I was a youngster, ah so many years ago, I liked Good Friday, because school was closed. However, because I was an altar boy I had to serve Mass at St. Patrick’s Church in Mystic.
Sunday is Easter Sunday. I know what it means because of my Catholic upbringing, however, as a youngster it meant something totally different too me. It meant new clothes to go to Church and Easter dinner, even though we ate at home, we got dressed for Easter Dinner. Even Dad wore a tie and a sport jacket and Mom dressed in her best. Dinner consisted of ham, mashed potato, sweet potato, pineapple gravy with large slices of pineapple and all the fixings, wonderful meal. But, first, I had to serve Mass at the church.

It also meant the Easter Bunny would come during the night, much like Santa Claus did. Why do all the good guys bearing gifts come at night? Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, the good tooth fairy, they all came at night and we never saw them, pretty sneaky, I think.
Back to the Easter Bunny, it always brought a basket full of candy, solid chocolate bunnies and eggs, those little marshmellowy things called Peeps and jelly Beans, lot of jelly beans. And then that sneaky Bunny always hid dyed colored eggs all over the house, under the beds, bureaus, chairs, on top of things. I could never understand how he got those eggs to hide. My brother, Mom and I would cook the eggs and dye them the night before. Somehow they got out of the kitchen and hidden all over the house.

We’d find eggs all over the place, sometimes they’d show up months later in places we didn’t look. I think the Easter Bunny drank a little something when he hid the eggs.
I miss those night visitors leaving gifts. At some point in time they stop coming as we grew older, but, as a parent, I did help the Easter Bunny when my son was young. It was more fun then, even though I still never saw the Easter Bunny.
This Easter morning I will search under my bed and everywhere in my apartment looking, just in case he comes. By the way, if Santa comes down the chimney, the tooth fairy flies in somehow. How does the Easter Bunny get in?
Happy Easter and have a wonderful Good Friday.
