$1.3M In State Funding Approved For Bunnell Track Replacement Project

STRATFORD, CT — The State Bond Commission this week approved $1.3 million in funding for the replacement of the Bunnell High School Track.

The Bunnell High School track serves as the only track in Stratford and is used by students and athletic teams from both Bunnell and Stratford High Schools, Wooster and Flood Middle Schools, local youth sports teams, and Stratford residents.

The track has had “deteriorating conditions for several years, resulting in the town investing in temporary, costly repairs to keep the track operational and open for use,” according to a news release from State Rep. Kaitlyn Shake. “Due to the current conditions, the track may no longer be able to host regular season meets.”

“I am thrilled the State Bond Commission approved my request of this critical $1.3 million investment today to replace the only athletic track in Stratford, located at Bunnell High School, and decrease the financial burden of this project on taxpayers,” Shake said. “The worsening conditions of the track have been a concern of our athletes, coaches, parents, teachers, and community members all throughout town for several years. This will make a major difference in the quality of life and opportunity for our student athletes and community members of all ages across our town. The replacement of the track will support Stratford Public Schools Athletic programs, allowing for competitions to be held again here in Stratford, helping to strengthen our town pride.”

In recent years, the track has seen a “significant increase in usage, causing conditions to decline, and temporary fixes are more common,” according to the news release. “The complete replacement of the track will allow for future long-term competitive use.”

“Thank you to Governor Lamont and the State Bonding Commission for approving this critical funding that supports Stratford Public Schools student-athletes and community members who utilize the Bunnell track,” said Shake, a Democrat who represents Stratford's 120th House District.

Mayor David Chess said the investment “marks an incredible win for Stratford Public Schools, our local student-athletes, and the entire community.”

“Soon, residents and students alike will have access to a state-of-the-art track-and-field facility designed to inspire excellence and wellness,” Chess said.
