2 Dogs Killed, 11 Displaced In Two-Alarm Fire In Stratford

A two-family home was destroyed in a fire that killed two dogs and displaced 11 people Friday in Stratford, according to fire officials.

STRATFORD, CT — Two dogs died in a fire that destroyed a two-family home and displaced 11 people Friday in Stratford, according to officials.

Multiple 911 calls reported a structure fire in the 400 block of Columbus Avenue just before 5 p.m. on Friday, according to Stratford Assistant Chief/Fire Marshal Robert Daniel.

Arriving crews found a two-family home heavily involved in fire with flames showing from the first and second floors and a second alarm was called, according to Daniel.

“Fire suppression operated multiple 2 ½ and 1 ¾ hose lines along with Truck 1’s aerial master stream to extinguish the fire,” Daniel wrote in a news release. “The fire was under control in approximately an hour and 15 minutes. The two-family structure suffered heavy fire damage throughout the entire structure and is a total loss.”

Daniel said no firefighters or residents were injured, but two dogs died in the fire.

Five adults and six children have been displaced by the fire and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross, according to Daniel.

A total of 22 firefighters and one safety officer responded to the fire. The Bridgeport and Milford fire departments provided station coverage during the incident and responded to additional calls in Stratford, according to Daniel.

The origin and cause of the fire is being investigated by the Fire Marshal’s office, Daniel said.
