Interim Economic Development Director Appointed, Staffing Changes Announced In Stratford

STRATFORD, CT — Stratford Mayor David Chess announced Monday staffing changes in the town's Economic Development Department and the appointment of Caryn Kaufman as interim director.

Kaufman currently serves as the mayor's chief of staff. No other staff changes are planned, according to a news release from the mayor's office.

"The transition creates an opportunity to build on the department's work, maintain continuity for businesses and partners, and strengthen the Town's long-term economic development strategy," the news release states. "Kaufman will oversee day-to-day operations, ongoing projects, business outreach, and small business development while the Town undertakes a thoughtful process to position the department for the future."

To support that work, officials said the town has engaged Mike Freimuth, a "highly respected economic development consultant, to provide strategic guidance, assist with organizational planning, and help ensure the Town continues advancing priority initiatives without interruption."

"Economic development remains central to our vision for a vibrant, resilient, and business-friendly community, and growing our economy is essential for providing property tax relief to our residents," Chess said. "This change gives us a valuable opportunity to assess our needs, reinforce what is working, and create a stronger structure for the future. With Caryn's leadership and Mike Freimuth's expertise, we are well positioned to continue building momentum and serving our businesses, residents, investors, and community partners."

Chess thanked the outgoing team members for their "service and contributions" to the town.

"We are grateful to Jimmy Capra and Anne Gaydos, who have led our economic development efforts, for their commitment to this community and the meaningful work they have accomplished," Chess said. "They have helped advance projects, strengthen relationships with local businesses, and support the Town's economic progress. We wish them every success in their next chapters."

The town will share additional information about the department's "long-term staffing and organizational plan as that process moves forward," according to the news release.
