Benedict Arnold’s name is synonymous with being a traitor. At an important point in the Revolutionary War, he orchestrated the handover of top-secret plans about the most important Patriot fort, West Point, to British spy John Andre. The plot unraveled; otherwise, the outcome of the fight for independence may have had a different ending.
Up until that point, Arnold was considered the best battlefield general on the Patriot side and George Washington considered him a close personal ally. 
When looking at reasons for Arnold’s traitorous behavior, his shattered dreams growing up in Norwich—and the huge impact that had on him—are often overlooked.
Mike Allen specializes in bringing history to life, through his background in journalism, radio broadcasting, podcasting and public speaking. Mike hosted the podcast Amazing Tales About History for four years, producing more than 200 episodes on Connecticut history. For ten years, Mike was News Director at western Connecticut radio station WRKI-FM before becoming Press Secretary to the Mayor of Danbury. During a subsequent, 25-year corporate career, he worked and lived internationally, specializing in marketing and communications. In-person or livestream options are available. Non-members must pre-register on CHJ's website, no later than Thursday, September 17, for location details. While our services are free of charge, we kindly ask non-members to consider a donation.
As the only Humanistic Jewish congregation in Connecticut, CHJ celebrates Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur with a Humanistic liturgy, beautiful live music (song leader and instrumental), and inspirational poetry and readings.
Our services strike a balance between the broad stream of Judaism and a secular humanistic view of Jewish culture and customs. They are unique and spiritually uplifting and allow one to reflect on the year that has passed and the promise of the new year to come.

The 35th
Annual Folks on Spokes &amp; Step Forward Ride + Walk event is planned for Sunday, October 4, 2026, from 8:00 am to 2 pm at Fowler Field in downtown Milford. 
As one of Connecticut’s longest running charitable events, cyclists and walkers come together to raise funds and awareness for mental health and addiction recovery in support of Bridges Healthcare’s services. Participants of all ages can enjoy the scenic Milford coastline by riding 5, 10, 20, or 40 mile routes or walking a 5K. This family-friendly event includes activities for kids, music, lunch, event t-shirts, and a special remembrance ceremony to honor lives lost to suicide and overdose.
Early registration discounts are available through August 31, 2026. From September 1-October 1, 2026 advanced registration fees are $50 per cyclist, $35 per walker, $15 for kids under 18. Children 6 and under are free.
