Catalytic Converter Thefts On The Rise In Stratford: Police
Police are advising residents that there has been a recent uptick in catalytic converter thefts in the Stratford area.
STRATFORD, CT — Police are advising residents that there has been a recent uptick in catalytic converter thefts in the Stratford area.
Police said the targeted vehicles include, but are not limited, to Hyundai and Kia models.
“Thieves often use Sawzalls or battery-powered grinding tools to cut these items from underneath vehicles,” police wrote in a news release.

Police said the suspects usually operate in groups of three to four and typically commit the crimes between the hours of 12:30 a.m. to 4 a.m.
“Please ensure that your home surveillance cameras are properly functioning in the event that you or your neighbors become victims,” police wrote in the news release. “Remain extra vigilant during nighttime hours and report any suspicious activity to our dispatch center at 203-385-4100.

“These thieves tend to target residential neighborhoods and often take only one to four minutes to complete the theft.”
Read the following tips from police to help reduce the risk of becoming a victim:
- Park in a well-lit area whenever possible
- Install motion-activated lighting around your home or driveway
- Consider installing a catalytic converter anti-theft device or protective shield
- If you have a garage, park your vehicle inside
- Report suspicious activity in your neighborhood
