Controversial Redistricting Plan Moves Forward In Stratford

A redistricting plan that would move an incumbent Democratic council member out of their district has advanced to the Town Council.

STRATFORD, CT — A controversial redistricting plan that would move an incumbent Democratic council member into a Republican-held district has advanced to the Town Council, according to the Connecticut Post.

The Post reported the council’s ordinance committee approved the proposal this week following a vote along party lines. The proposal must be approved by the full Town Council by June 14, according to the Post.

The proposed redistricting plan has angered Democrats, who have accused the Republican majority of targeting Minority Leader Kaitlyn Shake’s seat by gerrymandering her out of District 2 and into District 7.

Republicans have defended the plan, which would also alter the boundaries of other districts, as legally sound and based on shifting population levels from the latest U.S. Census, according to the Post.
