Coronavirus Stratford: Library, Pools And More Close

Neither the library nor Stratford Recreation offered a timeline for when programs and facilities would return to their usual availability.

STRATFORD, CT — Stratford parents won't be able to take their children to the library or the pool when schools are shuttered in the coming days — they're both closed too, as a result of the new coronavirus.

A Stratford child who attends Wilcoxson Elementary School has been diagnosed with the virus. Wilcoxson students and staff have been directed to stay home and monitor their health for 14 days. Additionally, all Stratford public schools are closed, with students scheduled to transition Monday to distance learning.

The Stratford Library building will close Friday until further notice, the library announced Thursday, although services will be available remotely, with staff on hand during regular hours to help with questions. Overdue fees will be suspended and library cards set to expire have been extended to May.

All Stratford Recreation programs and activities are canceled, according to the town, and the Ella Grasso and Flood pools are closed.

The Sterling House Community Center announced it had canceled preschool and after-school programs, as well as scheduled programs and community group meetings, through the rest of March. Staff will be available 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays to answer questions and assist with resources. The community center will accept donations of food, money or hygiene items during the same hours. Food pantry service will take place 1 to 6 p.m. Mondays and 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

As of Thursday, the police department will conduct public fingerprinting 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, the department said. All child seat installations will be suspended until further notice.

Stratford's coronavirus case is the fifth to be diagnosed in Connecticut. The governor has declared a state of emergency and many area school districts and colleges have announced closures or switches to online-only learning.
