Female Spies in the Civil War

The Stratford Library will host author and historian Matthew Bartlett for a program on Saturday, May 9 at 2:00 pm. The author will discuss “For the Sake of the Country: Female Spies in the Civil War.” The program, which is sponsored by the John Hutchinson Memorial Fund, is free and open to the public.

The program focuses on four women who risked all for their country during the war. Bartlett will reveal how these women played an important part in the extensive spy networks that were formed on both the Union and Confederate sides. He will be dressed in period costume for the program.

Bartlett is a 2013 graduate of the American Military University with a Master’s in Military History with a concentration in Civil War studies. He has written four books about the battle of Gettysburg and is currently working on book five in the series.
