Founding Father From Stratford To Be Celebrated By Town

William Samuel Johnson Day is Monday, but the celebrations start this weekend.

Via the Town of Stratford: STRATFORD, CT — The town will observe William Samuel Johnson Day with a brief ceremony 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7, at Town Hall. The ceremony, conducted on the steps of Town Hall, will be followed by refreshments served in the Council Chambers. The public is invited to attend.

William Samuel Johnson (1727-1819) of Stratford was an American statesman, clergyman and attorney noted for his early contributions to the United States. He participated in the Constitutional Convention, and was one of Connecticut’s two signers of the United States Constitution in 1787. He represented Connecticut in the first U.S. Senate and also served as the first post-revolutionary president of King’s College (later Columbia).

The Stratford Historical Society will be spearheading celebrations of Johnson this weekend, with an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Judson House, 967 Academy Hill. Christ Episcopal Church will have costumed actors across the street in their burying grounds from noon to 2 p.m.
