The man is accused of shooting his stepson and wife while trying to protect her while she was arguing with her son, according to police.

STRATFORD, CT — A 58-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after police said he accidentally shot his wife while trying to protect her while she was arguing with her son in Stratford.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. on Bates Street in Stratford on May 22.

The man is accused of firing a round from his registered firearm while arguing with his 36-year-old stepson, according to police.

Police said the round also struck the man’s wife.

Both the stepson and wife were hospitalized with injuries that police said weren’t life-threatening.

Police said the initial investigation determined that the man was in the process of protecting his wife while she was arguing with her son.

The man was charged with two counts of first-degree assault with a firearm and one count of first-degree reckless endangerment. He was held in lieu of a $100,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

The incident remains under investigation, according to police.
